What is working visa?

Foreign nationals have to obtain "status of resident" when they want to work in Japan.  We call "status of resident"  as "working visa".

It is not a formal expression.

Skilled labor visa

​Visa (status of resident) for skilled labors requires business experience and good skill in jobs. 

For example, chefs, pilots, sports trainers and sommeliers.

Requirements and judgment points of skilled labor visa

1. Business experience

① Chefs:More than 10 years business experience

  ※Chefs of Thai cuisine: more than 5 years business experience

② Pilots:More than 250 hours flight experience

③ Sports trainers:More than 3 years business experience

④ Sommeliers:More than 5 years business experience and certified person

⑤ Others, architectural engineers, animal trainers, etc.:More than 10 years business experience

​2.Be payed either equaling or surpassing to Japanese workers

It is not allowed to employ foreign nationals with unreasonably cheap wages.

Wages need to be the same or more than Japanese employees who operate the same business.​

​3.Stable management, needfulness of a company

A company you work for needs to prove "necessity of foreign worker's skill" and a visa applicant has"enough tasks to be employed"

Designated activities visa

There are variety of works in Japan that foreign nationals engage in.

"Designated activities" means activities which are not "business manager", "engineer・specialists in humanity・international services". Activities that is permitted to work, such as "working holiday" and "graduates from Japanese universities (Designated No.46)" are included in Designated activites.

Requirements and judgment points of Designated No.46 visa (graduates from Japanese universities)

1. Applicants must graduate from Japanese universities or graduate schools.

Applicants require taking a degree at Japanese universities or graduate schools.

In case of dropping out from junior colleges or universities, it is not eligible for Designated no.46.

​2.Applicants must be full-time worker and direct hired

First, applicants need to work full-time.

If it is a full-time job, either regular employees or contracted employees are eligible.

However, dispatched employees are not eligible.

​3.Applicants must have certain level of Japanese language skill.

① Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) : Not lower than N1.

② Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) : Not lower than 480.

​※JLPT is administered twice a year, BJT is administered as needed.

​4.Applicants must be payed the same or more than Japanese.

It is not allowed to employ foreign nationals with unreasonably cheap wages.

Wages need to be the same or more than Japanese employees who operate the same business.​

​5.The business content must be communicating in fluent Japanese.

Communicated with customers or co-workers in Japanese in necessary as the business content.

​6.The job must related to what applicants learned in universities.

The business content has to relate to what applicants majored in universities, or the study is planed to be used in the future at a work.

Examples of jobs

Restaurants

Provide services to foreign customers as an interpreter, and provide services to Japanese customers.

Retail stores (shops)

Work as a buyer, product planner and consultative sales to Japanese customers  as well as to foreign customers as an interpreter. (It is not eligible if the job content is only displaying products or cleaning up the store.)

Hotels or inns

Building up a homepage in foreign language and its update and management,  interpreta ndu guide for foreign visitors,  teaching foreign co-workers and work as a bellboy or doorman. Provide service to Japanese visitors as well. ( It is not eligible if the job content is only cleaning up guest rooms.) 

● Nursing home

Communicate with users, including foreign users, and engage in health-care service, as well as  teaching foreign employees and technical interns. (It is not eligible if the job content is only cleaning up and taking care of laundry.)

●Convenience store

Purchase of stock, merchandise management, provide customer service to foreign customers as well as to Japanese customers.

Intra-company transferee visa

This visa is required when a worker of foreign company is transferred to the headquarter or a branch in Japan.

Requirements and judgment points of intra-company transferee visa

1.Tenure

Applicants need more than 1 year tenure at foreign headquarter or branch.​

​2.  Be payed either equaling or surpassing to Japanese workers

It is not allowed to employ foreign nationals with unreasonably cheap wages.

Wages need to be the same or more than Japanese employees who operate the same business.​

​3.The business contents correspond to engineer・specialist in humanities・International services visa

The business contents have to be corresponded to engineer・specialist in humanities・International services visa.

4.Need to have an association between the company in foreign country and the company in Japan

It must fulfill at least one of following ①~③.

① 100% investment (headquarter・branch)

② 50% investment (consoling company)

​③ Affiliate company ( be able to have a crucial impact in business policy through human affairs, funds and technology)
